September 29, 1994- The crew of Coast Guard LORAN Station Iwo Jima decommissioned their station and turned it over to a crew from the Japanese Maritime Safety Agency. 
September 30, 1954-  The USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear submarine, is commissioned by the U.S. Navy.   
October 1, 1942- Bell P-59 Airacomet fighter, 1st US jet, made its maiden flight.
October 2, 1799-  Establishment of Washington Navy Yard.
October 3, 2010-  Germany makes its last reparations payment for World War I, settling its outstanding debt from the 1919 Versailles Treaty and quietly closing the final chapter of the conflict that shaped the 20th century. 
October 4, 1648 -  Peter Stuyvesant established America’s 1st volunteer firemen.
October 5, 1990 -   NASA astronaut and Coast Guard CDR Bruce Melnick made his first space flight when he served as a Mission Specialist aboard the space shuttle Discovery on Space Shuttle Mission STS -41, which flew from 6 to 10 October 1990.
